This is an excerpt from an email I received from a fellow kitchen events worker:
I received a call to work an event for Contemporary Catering, I had heard great things about them from friends who had worked as wait staff for this company, and was expecting a good experience. As soon as I arrived at the event I was treated by Jenny Dennis with a scornful look, stressed out eyes, and not one hello or nice to meet you. The first words from her were "ARE THOSE JEANS YOU ARE WEARING???!!!" Now, if you've worked at kitchens be it a restaurant or catering event, jeans are pretty normal, as long as you aren't wearing glow in the dark pants you're fine since you'll be out of sight of the guests. The Chef of the event, Chef Heath, was great, his food was phenomenal and his personality rocked. He would walk the line, direct the crew where assistance was needed, encourage everyone to keep doing a great job, and was a pleasure to work with.
The following day I received a call from my staffing agency letting me know that Jenny Dennis from Contemporary Catering refused to pay for my time working, saying I performed "sub-par". A question is, if my performance was sub-par, why was I not sent home? And why did the event Chef never mention this to me? I highly doubt my performance was sub-par, but to be criticized by Jenny Dennis, who was running around like a headless chicken (you can tell by her stressed-out eyes) coordinating the staff inside the event and rarely stepped into the kitchen area is really, really bad. Now, the staffing agency is paying because I did work the event, but for Contemporary Catering to pull something like this is really unprofessional behavior. If someone is not performing well and just standing around, then send them home, fuck, send me home if I'm that bad, which I obviously wasn't. I think Jenny Dennis was having one of "those" days. If not weeks.
I would always work for Chef Heath, he's great and runs a great kitchen, as long as that lady Jenny Dennis isn't around.
Here is a link to her bio, notice the "a la Dancing With The Stars" comment, way to pump up a resume/bio:
